Colleague in the Legal Arena

I am Guyanese and I am one of the members of this phenomenal group of fourteen women. I came to the United States in my twenties and three weeks after I arrived, I started working at one of the oldest and largest private banks in the United States. After about a year, I realized that even though I had very good secretarial skills, I would need to pursue my studies if I wanted to be more successful and expand my financial opportunities.

I enrolled in a part-time evening program at a Community College, studying to be a legal secretary while continuing to work during the day. Two years later, I decided that I needed to speed up my studies. That year, twenty three years ago, was a very eventful one for me. I transferred to a four year college majoring in Office Administration and Technology on a full time basis during the days, I changed jobs and went to work for a major law firm as a legal secretary at nights and I got married all in the same year.

Now, twenty three years later, I am still working for that major law firm as a partner secretary. I love my job and enjoy the many benefits that I have working there. My responsibilities vary. On any given day, I am either managing administrative tasks; composing and revising legal documents, including letters; answering my partners’ phones and acting as liaison between clients and my partners; scheduling appointments; making travel arrangements; attending to billing matters; filing or taking care of any other matters that arise.

I am proud and honored to be married to my partner, my friend, who is a Judge and who unselfishly gives so much of himself to me and our three wonderful sons. They are truly a gift from God to me and I thank God each and every day for his abundant blessings.
