I am one of the attorneys in the group. I came to the United States at an early age from Jamaica, West Indies to advance my education and to realize the American dream. I resided with my grandmother until her death during my first year in law school. I was the first of my family to attend college.
My dream to become an attorney began in high school. Upon graduating at the top of my class I attended college and majored in Political Science and History. While there, I pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the first black sorority founded for women and served as the Sorority’s secretary for two terms. I graduated cum laude and was awarded highest honors in History, and went on to law school to pursue my dream.
While attending law school, I learned and developed my deep appreciation for the law. Additionally, it was there that I learned how to analyze a problem and think analytically. It was there that I developed an interest in criminal law and ultimately sought a career as a prosecutor.
After graduation, I pursued my dream of becoming a prosecutor. I was hired by the District Attorney’s office of a major city and am currently the Bureau Chief of the Narcotics Division. During my twenty years at the District Attorney’s office, I have been an exemplary assistant. I rose quickly through the ranks of the office, first as a line assistant responsible for drafting complaints and prosecuting misdemeanor crimes, but was quickly promoted to a trial bureau, where I was responsible for the prosecution of various felony crimes, including but not limited to attempted murder. From the trial bureau I was assigned to one of the units of the Career Major Crimes Division, the Special Victims Bureau. There, I prosecuted difficult cases involving victims of rape, elder abuse and child victims. My excellent trial skills and achievements ultimately landed me the position of Supervisor in one of the Supreme Court Trial Bureaus, where I was responsible for the training of younger assistants prosecuting felony cases. Subsequently, I was appointed to Deputy Bureau Chief of that unit and within three years was promoted to Chief of the Division. I am responsible for a staff of thirty including twenty attorneys. The lessons that I learned have served me well in my legal career and I wish to continue to utilize them as a catalyst toward success and financial independence in this investment club.
In addition to my responsibilities in the court room and to my assistants, I have lectured elementary and high school students about the criminal justice system, including the negative effects of crime in their community. I address quality of life concerns at Community Precinct Counsel meetings and lecture members of the police department regarding search and seizure issues and testifying at trials.
I have also achieved great success in my personal life. I am married to an awesome man, who is also an attorney and the love of my life. He has been with and supported me through some very difficult times. Our relationship has been tested, but our love is strong and unwavering. Last year, we finally realized our dream of becoming parents. We have been blessed with a beautiful baby girl who is currently 14 months old.
Stands back from the keyboard in amazement! Thanks!
